Clinical Survey of Patient in Intensive Care Unit from March 1988 to February 1990 in Korea University Haewha Hospital



Abstract
The intensive care unit of Korea University Haewha Hospital is a 19 bed multidisciplinary ICU which has combined characteristics of an intensive therapy unit and intensive observation unit.
The patient population is composed of respiratory failure, multiorgan failure and other critically ill patients both medical and surgical. The ICU of Korea University Haewha Hospital was established in 1961 since that time the size and facilities of the ICU have been changed.
We have analyzed 1980 ICU patients starting from March l988 to February 1990 in order to get some principles for the management of ICU.
The results of analysis are as follows;
1) The number of patients in l988 was 1030, in 1989, 860 and the total number of patients was 1890. 1¢¥he total number consisted of 1206 male patients and 684 female patients.
2) The mortality rate was 20.l% in 1988 24% in 1989 and overall mortality was 21.9%,
3) The average length of stay was 6.04 days in 1988, 6.24 days in 1989, and the overall length of stay was 6,13 days.
4) The distribution of the patients according to length of stay showed the highest percentage in 3-5 days stay group which was 39.4% in 1988, 38.6% in 1989.
5) The mortality rate according to length of stay showed the lowest rate in 3-5 days stay grop which was 14.5%.
6) The highest mortality reate. 32.7%, was seen in 7th decade group,
7) Most of patients belonged to Internal Medicine, Neuro Surgery, Chest Surgery, Pediatrics which was 30.9%, 27.4%, 18%, 11.4% of the total patients population respectively.
8) The causes of death were seen to be CNS dysfuntion, hepatic failure, cardiovascular failure, respiratory failure which were 3l.5% 21.5% 18.2%, 14.8% respectively.
9) The percentage of patients who were infected during their stay in IGU was 5.9%.
l0) The number of patients who received ventilatory support was 285, being 15% of patients and mortality rate was 54.
